About Cornwall Avifauna

Cornwall Avifauna is a long-term project to document the birds of Cornwall — their distribution, status, population trends, and natural history. It draws on decades of field observation, county records, and published literature to build a comprehensive digital reference for the county's avifauna.

The accounts cover every species recorded in Cornwall, from common residents to rare vagrants. Each entry traces the bird's history in the county, describes its habitats and seasonal occurrence, and situates it within the broader pattern of change in British and European bird populations. Where data allow, population estimates and trend assessments are included.

The project is maintained by a small group of ornithologists and naturalists with long experience of Cornish birdwatching. Records are drawn from the Cornwall Bird Watching and Preservation Society, BTO surveys, and the contributors' own fieldwork. We aim to update accounts as new information becomes available and to reflect the dynamic character of a county whose bird life continues to change.
